Zelensky suspends 11 opposition parties for head of one-party state

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in support of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, has announced that all opposition parties will be suspended indefinitely until martial law is declared.

In a statement issued yesterday evening, President Zelensky announced the following decree: Political parties that his party has identified as “pro-Russian” will be suspended until martial law is repealed across the country. The list includes basically every opposition party.

Ukraine’s RNBO has suspended the activities of political parties for the duration of the war, Zelensky said:

For opposing platform-life
Shariat party
Nashi
Opposition bloc
Socialist party
Left opposition party
Union of Left Forces
Derzava and others

With millions of their voters now disconnected from any political infrastructure, it is safe to say that this is not a step taken by ‘democracy’.

Ukraine may be the first instance in human history of a country becoming * more * tolerant and * more * liberal under the pressure of war.

Not too liberal. Sorry, Frum.

Suspended parties include the “Opposition Platform for Life (OPFL)”, Ukraine’s second-largest party in parliament. OPFL has been a staunch defender of Ukraine’s sovereignty since the beginning of the Russian aggression. At the beginning of the attack, on 24 February, the OPFL expelled a member of their group for expressing support for the attack. When martial law was declared and approved by parliament, not a single member of the OPFL voted against the measure. A few days later, OPFL backed a measure of criminal cooperation with Russia. On March 7, they issued a statement calling for a ceasefire and the complete withdrawal of all Russian troops.

You must be free to believe that banning all political parties that do not fully comply with the Zelensky line and imprisoning random bloggers for criticizing the government is great – but then stop spamming me with your “they have attacked a sovereign democracy” line.

To put it bluntly, the OPFL has 43 seats in the Ukrainian parliament. They represent millions of citizens and are particularly pro-Eastern Ukraine.

If similar steps were to be taken in the United States, it would be as if Biden had snatched the Republicans from all political influence.

The following political parties were suspended: Opposition Platform-for-Life, Shari Party, Nashi, Opposition Bloc, Left Opposition Party, Union of Left Forces, State, Progressive Socialist Party of Ukraine, Socialist Party of Ukraine, Socialist Party and Volodymyr Saldo Bloc.
