(Washington DC) – Republican Alaska Republican Don Young, the longest-serving member of Congress, has died at the age of 88.

“It is with deep heart and deep sorrow that we announce that Congressman Don Young (R-AK), Dean of the House and honorary champion for Alaska, has died today on his way home to be with the state of Alaska and the people of his choice,” his office said Friday. Reported. “His beloved wife Ann was by his side.”

He was in his 25th term as a delegate, was re-elected in 2020 and was the only delegate from Alaska, CNN reported.

Born June 9, 1933, in Meridian, California, north of Sacramento, Young will pursue his associate’s degree at Yuba Junior College before graduating from Chico State College with a bachelor’s degree in education, according to his congressional biography. In the course of his degree, he served in the 41st Tank Battalion of the US Army from 1955 to 1957.

Young first entered the public service in 1964, when he was elected mayor of Fort Yukon, Alaska, and served four years in the State House and three years in the State Senate.

He was first sworn in to the US House of Representatives on March 6, 1973, after winning a special election.
